What to watch this weekend: 'Atypical,' catch up with the Defenders before their Netflix debut

Keir Gilchrist stars as an autistic teenager in Atypical.

Keir Gilchrist stars as an autistic teenager in Atypical.

High-functioning: Atypical

Sam (Keir Gilchrist) is an 18-year-old senior in high school trying to figure out his place in the world. He's also on the autism spectrum. He would actually be considered high-functioning. He's got a job at an electronics store with his best friend, an adorable relationship with his protective older sister and just decided he wants to "put himself out there" and start dating. Atypical is a new family dramedy about growing up autistic and searching for love and independence, even if Sam's story isn't representative of all people on the spectrum. The series will make you uncomfortable at times, and you'll want to scream in outrage when Sam gets picked on by horrible teenagers. But the best parts come when Sam and sister Casey (Brigette Lundy-Paine) have heart-to-hearts and whenever he gushes his vast knowledge and love of penguins. Now streaming on Netflix.

Get to know The Defenders

Next week, the newest Marvel squad will be on Netflix. The Defenders teams up New York City's unlikeliest heroes to protect and defend the Big Apple. But before you watch The Defenders (premiering 3 a.m. Aug. 18), you should get to know the team of Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) by watching their respective series, all currently available on the streaming giant.

Jessica Jones: The smart-mouth private investigator whose numerous past traumas took her away from the superhero life. But her first season with mind-controlling villain Kilgrave (David Tennant) was a chilling foray into Marvel's grittier side.

Luke Cage: The ex-con has super strength and bulletproof skin, which he used to protect his beloved Harlem from gangsters and corrupt politicians. His first season boasted Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth and Simone Missick as Misty Knight.

Daredevil: An accident involving hazardous chemicals blinded a young Matt Murdock, but also gifted him with extraordinary sensory abilities. By day he's a scrappy, savvy lawyer and by night he's the crime-fighting devil of Hell's Kitchen.

Iron Fist: Young Danny Rand was orphaned after his parents' plane crashed in the Himalayas. He was taken in for almost 20 years by the Order of the Crane Mother and trained in advanced martial arts, where he gained the ability of the Iron Fist.

Review: Iron Fist limply mixes martial arts with corporate litigation

Coming to Netflix in August: The Defenders, Death Note and more

Princess Diana: In her own words

NatGeo's new documentary film Diana: In Her Own Words hopes to shed light on a specific point in Princess Diana's life by telling it through her own words and voice. In 1991, Diana sat for a series of secret interviews with a close friend and journalist Andrew Morton, who was writing a book about her. At that point, not many were aware that Diana's marriage to Prince Charles was in ruin. The documentary boasts a fresh perspective on the princess' journey from quiet childhood to her relationship with the Prince of Wales and the royal family. Though she died tragically 20 years ago, the NatGeo film allows Diana to reflect upon her own life. Like other documentaries commemorating the 20th anniversary of her death, this one aims to show how little prepared she was for such a public life and the expectations of being a royal. 9 p.m. Monday, NatGeo.

Breaking the silence: The Murder of Laci Peterson

Almost 15 years ago, Laci Peterson vanished just before Christmas in 2002. She was eight months pregnant with her first child with husband Scott. Four months later, her body washed ashore and in 2004 her husband was charged with first degree murder and now sits on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California. The six-episode documentary on A&E boasts exclusive interviews with Scott, who's now 44 and awaiting appeals. The series also features interviews with Scott's family and attorneys. The horrific circumstances surrounding Laci's death -- along with Scott maintaining his innocence -- made this case perfect for obsessive media attention. It even spawned two dozens books and numerous TV documentaries and movies. Tune in to A&E on Tuesday to dive into Modesto's most notorious double-murder. 10 p.m. Tuesday, A&E
