Rory McIlroy to make Valspar Championship debut at Innisbrook next year

The Valspar Championship will get a notable boost in star power next year.

Four-time major winner and former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy will play the PGA Tour event at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor for the first time, the tournament announced Friday after it was included in McIlroy's early 2018 schedule posted on his website.

"Looking forward to a busy start to my 2018 season," McIlroy wrote on Twitter. "Some great new events on my schedule."

The Valspar is one of seven tournaments McIlroy has scheduled to prepare for April's Masters, where he will try to complete a career Grand Slam. Running March 8-11, it is the next-to-last tournament in that stretch, followed by the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando.

McIlroy saw his world ranking fall from No. 2 to 10 this year as he dealt with a rib injury that kept him out for two lengthy periods and caused him to end his season in September.

Leading up to the Valspar, McIlroy has scheduled the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (Jan. 18-21), the Dubai Desert Classic (Jan. 25-28), the Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Feb. 8-11), the Genesis Open in California (Feb. 15-18) and the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens (Feb. 22-25).

McIlroy has a home near Palm Beach Gardens.
